Split, Croatia (day 56 - March 3, 2023)

Narrow streets

Day 56

Started off the day early, leaving the apartment, solo, around 6:30am for a short stroll as patches of sunlight brightened the horizon. Found a bakery along the water for a bit of coffee and a pastry. Arriving back at the apartment I waited for the slumbering brother of mine to wake up :D

We walked along the promenade, which wraps the harbor coastline here, to the area surrounding Diocletian's Palace. The palace served as a residence for the Roman emperor as well as holding areas to house the Roman garrison. The palace was built in the fourth century A.D.. A temple of Jupiter was originally on the site, and was later used as the mausoleum of Diocletian. In the seventh century it became the Cathedral of St. Domnius. The cathedral underwent a number of additions over the years, including the addition of the bell tower in the twelfth century. The cathedral is known as the oldest in Europe.

Today most of the buildings within the palace walls are still used, most as shops and a few as homes. The streets in within the palace area are very narrow, with some of the buildings nearly touching each other. A number of the buildings bulge out into the street, due to the earth settling, earthquakes, and the age of the structures.

You can pay to go up the bell tower, which we did. Really nice views of the city can be seen the whole way up.

Did more walking around the city and saw the local soccer stadium, Stadion Poljud, where HNK Hajduk Split plays. After a rest at the apartments we went out to the Maritime museum where we could learn about the sea history before Croatia became its own country on June 25, 1991.

Ended the day at a restaurant called Konoba Fetivi. We ate black risotto with cuttlefish, a Croatian rice dish with chunks of fish which is turned black from cuttlefish ink. Doesn’t look too appetizing, but it tasted alright, considering I am not a huge fan of seafood. That being said, the next dish we had was a platter of different types of fish: tuna, swordfish, sea bass, blue fin, and one other type of fish I cannot remember the name of. It was all really tasty, I especially enjoyed the tuna steak. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area :)

Wisdomous words of the day:

The work that you make will be equal to what you paid attention to
